Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Clos des Ducs: 1920-2017 (Oct 2019)

Saturated dark red-ruby. Deep, powerful aromas of kirsch, menthol, licorice and dark chocolate, along with a faint musky nuance. Wonderfully rich and enveloping wine, with its distinctly dark fruit flavors accented by pepper and spices. At once dense and energetic owing to its sappy minerality and surprising back-end acidity, this wine is nonetheless a bit…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Medium red, the lightest of these 2014s. Reticent but highly nuanced nose offers aromas of redcurrant, dark raspberry, milk chocolate, earth and animal fur, plus a riper suggestion of prune (this fruit was picked at 13% potential alcohol). Wonderfully silky and ripe; large-scaled and round for 2014 but not at all heavy. Not as primary…

Dom Pérignon in Three Acts (Nov 2017)

All of the qualities found in the original release are amped up in the 1976 Dom Pérignon Œnothèque (Disgorged 2003). Unctuous and deep the 1976 Œno is a real powerhouse, but all of that intensity is nicely countered by the wine’s brightness and energy. This is another stellar release in the Œnothèque (P2) series.

Burgundy With Plenty Of Age: 1865-1999 (May 2019)

The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has long been one of my favourite vintages, not that I get to taste it that often. It has an almost extravagant bouquet that delivers plush Morello cherry, wild strawberry and light cassis aromas and with aeration, these ebb to reveal more tertiary notes and a touch of…

2000 and 1999 Red Burgundies (Mar 2002)

Bright ruby-red. Sexy nose combines maraschino cherry, roast coffee, bitter chocolate and lively oak spices not apparent in the foregoing wines. Full, sweet and chewy in the mouth, with a silky, layered texture to buffer the wine sound acidity. Cherry and black raspberry flavors are nicely sweetened by the wine’s new oak. Features a long,…
