Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Serre was very seductive when I first encountered it from barrel. In bottle, it has certainly closed up on the nose, perchance due to the miserable inclement weather on the day of tasting (although other wines from JP Moueix were unaffected.) However, after 10 minutes of aeration plus the 30 minutes of…

Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 La Serre has (yet another) gorgeous, sensual and very pure bouquet of dark cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents, the new oak seamlessly integrated. It reminds me of the 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent black cherries and blueberry and saturated tannins counterpoised by a fine bead of acidity. It…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Serre is a brooding, potent Saint-Émilion. Blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, leather, incense, tobacco and gravel add to an impression of gravitas and virile intensity that builds as it opens gradually in the glass. There’s real weight and substance here.

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 La Serre offers plenty of immediacy. Blueberry, spice, new leather, tobacco and cedar give the 2020 its effusive personality. Bright acids lend quite a bit of energy. The tannins feel just a bit coarse. That is the only thing holding the 2020 back from a slightly more positive note.

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

Sweet tobacco, licorice, cedar and red stone fruits run through the 2014 La Lagune. Medium in body and silky on the palate, the wine offers lovely balance in an understated style. This is quite pretty.

Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 2014 La Lagune has a tightly wound bouquet that may have closed down since I last tasted it. It begins to open with blackberry, graphite and wet limestone scents, quite strict and focused, but very well defined and showing great clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and density with a little chalkiness…
