The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Bright, saturated medium red. Captivating nose combines deep smoky minerality and sexy soil tones. Round on entry, then quite backward in the middle and much less showy than the Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers. Today the wine’s strong saline, smoky minerality is keeping the fruit in the background. Most impressive on the ripely tannic, very long…

The 2013 & 2012 Red Burgundies (Apr 2015)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts is huge on the palate, with notable power and structure to burn. The flavors are bold in this decidedly intense Malconsorts. Pomegranate, red cherry and spice are some of the notes that take center stage as this dramatic Burgundy opens up in the glass. The Malconsorts was the last wine…

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a typically powerful bouquet with macerated small dark cherries, a hint of dark chocolate and loamy aromas that envelop the senses, developing more floral top notes with aeration. The palate is supple and silky smooth, very sensual with black cherries, boysenberry and spice with just a slight…

Layers of dark, dense fruit open up with explosive energy and towering lift. The RSV is going to require considerable patience, but it is absolutely compelling today.

2013 and 2012 White Burgundies (Sep 2014)

(malo finished): Very reduced aromas of oatmeal and iodine. Hugely concentrated, rich and tactile, with hints of lemon, minerals, smoke and spices. Finishes musky, sweet and soil-inflected, with terrific mineral drive. There are just four and a half barrels of this juice in 2013–and only three in 2012.

The 2013 & 2012 Red Burgundies (Apr 2015)

The 2013 Grands-Échézeaux comes across as quite wild in its powerful, unrestrained personality. In recent vintages, the GE has become more polished, but the 2013 is a real brute today. Dark, savory almost Syrah-like notes take shape in the glass. Game, smoke, herbs and wild flowers wrap around the imposing, bracing finish. I expect the…
