2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, iron, coffee and spices. Supple, spicy wine with excellent definition and an impression of piquant acidity to its redcurrant, raspberry and mineral flavors. A captivating saline quality draws out the finish. There are still plenty of dusty tannins to be absorbed but they’re neither dry nor green. Lacks only the…

Vinous Table: Rusty Staub Charity Dinner, New York (Dec 2015)

The 1970 is the most subtle of these Unicos, although I have tasted fresher examples. Delicate and perfumed throughout, the 1970 is laced with the essence of crushed flowers, tobacco, dried cherries and mint.

Spain’s New Releases, Part 2: Triumphs and Travails (May 2017)

(fermented in large oak tanks and aged for six years in new French and American oak barriques) Saturated ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh ripe red fruits, floral oils, pipe tobacco and incense take on sexy vanilla and woodsmoke nuances as the wine opens up. Densely packed yet shockingly lithe on the palate, offering intense…

The Best New Wines from Spain (Nov 2001)

Medium ruby. Sappy raspberry, game and spices on the nose. A wine of great verve and sweetness; lush and chewy but also urgent and sharply delineated. Bracing acids give this dense wine buns of steel. Wonderful expanding finish features strong but thoroughly ripe tannins. An outstanding vintage for this legendary wine.

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is an outstanding expression of both vineyard and vintage. It has a stunning, exquisitely defined bouquet with pure, ethereal red cherry and crushed strawberry scents infused with crushed stone aromas, later incense and potpourri. The palate is beautifully defined with filigree tannin, elegant yet delivering the concentration you expect from…

The 2001 Red Burgundies at Age 15 (Apr 2017)

Medium red with amber tones. Captivating balsamic nose offers notes of truffle, spiced bread and orange zest, along with a positive porty element. Wonderfully silky and broad, with sexy strawberry and redcurrant flavors complicated by a note of black olive. Really saturates the mouth on the broad, long, gripping finish, hinting at marzipan.
