Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Saintayme is endowed with an impressively well-defined and focused bouquet with intense black cherries and blackberry fruit, tobacco and cedar. Plenty of energy here. The palate is quite oaky on the entry, but this is a Right Bank with plenty of stuffing, quite peppery towards the finish and demonstrating admirable persistence. Superb. Tasted…

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Saintayme has calmed down nicely since I tasted the barrel sample, still outgoing in some ways yet displaying fine delineation and a tad more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry, quite sapid for this cuvée, and lightly spiced, leading to a structured finish. Don’t hesitate to leave…

Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Saintayme is one of the under the radar gems in this range. It often needs quite a bit of time to emerge, as is the case with the 2018, which only shows its true potential with several hours of air. Time brings out attractive floral and spice accents to play off the dark…

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Saintayme has an attractive bouquet of pure blackberry, cedar and pine aromas, becoming more and more expressive with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite tight and maybe just needing a little more flesh on the granular finish. A bit dry compared to the Montlandrie or the La Chenade.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

Denis Durantou’s 2016 Saintayme is soft, floral and forward, with lovely red cherry and plum fruit. Soft contours give this open-knit, easygoing Saint-Émilion plenty of immediacy. A slight vegetal note is a touch distracting. Otherwise, this is very nicely done.

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Saintayme has a well defined bouquet of black cherry, boysenberry, mint and violet aromas that gradually unfurl in the glass; the oak is neatly integrated. The well-balanced palate features supple tannins. A full-bodied Saint-Émilion with grip and muscle, missing some finesse and tension on the finish. Then again, maybe its burly character stands…
