2012 and 2011 White Burgundies (Sep 2013)

Pale yellow. Reticent nose hints at pear, clove, menthol and wet stone. Concentrated and penetrating, with harmonious lemony acidity framing and carrying the smoke and lemon flavors. At once dense and crisp, and nicely long on the aftertaste. Needs some time in bottle to express itself.

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Good deep red. Briary black fruits, chocolate and pepper on the nose; very Bonnes-Mares. Fat, ripe and mouthfilling; large-scaled without being especially sweet. Lively notes of dark berries, minerals and fresh herbs carry through on the firm, youthful finish. Needs seven or eight years of aging.

Vertical Tasting of Domaine de Chevalier Rouge (Apr 2013)

(a blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; pH 3.78; 12.9% alcohol): Medium-deep ruby-red. Enticing aromas of redcurrant, plum, violet, minerals and graphite complemented by sexy oak spices. Broad, lush and sweet, with a pristine quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries, black cherry and spices. Harmonious acidity gives the…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Red-ruby. Ripe aromas of plum, mocha, tobacco leaf and shoe polish. Fairly intensely flavored but tightly wound and rather dry, with hints of currant and tobacco leaf. Seems leaner and more rigid than either of the subsequent vintages, or is this just stunted from the bottling? A bit tart on the end.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Domaine de Chevalier is deep in color. It has a precocious bouquet of black cherries, blueberry, red currant and violets, very well defined and focused; there is real panache here. The palate is medium-bodied, stocky and quite foursquare at the moment, with dry-ish tannins – what you might call a “masculine” wine. Quite…

Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

The 2013 is a powerhouse. Dense, heady and massively structured, the 2013 is impossibly young. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of intense dark red fruit in this potent, brooding wine. Graphite, smoke, cedar and tobacco run through this virile, statuesque wine. The wine’s sheer youthful intensity is truly remarkable. I wouldn’t dream…
