2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Good bright red. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, plum, truffle and smoke, plus a whiff of game. Sweeter and creamier than the Taillepieds, with some very ripe red fruit flavors accented by a peppery nuance. Very pliant and accessible wine with broad, ripe tannins, no rough edges and excellent length. Certainly more open-knit than the Taillepieds…

2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

(two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey.

Blind Vision: 2015 Burgundy Red & White (Nov 2018)

The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(bottled at the end of May 2017; vinified with 15% whole clusters and aged in 30% new oak): Healthy dark red. Less dark on the nose than this wine appeared to be in November of 2016, with its redcurrant and cherry aromas complicated by menthol and flinty minerality. At once silky and energetic on entry,…

The 2010 Red Burgundies (Feb 2012)

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is an intensely cool, reticent wine. The bouquet recalls the Mazis, but then the firm Ruchottes tannins set in. Ultimately the Ruchottes is built on purity, definition and nuance. The chiseled aromas and flavors possess stunning detail, but it will be some time before the 2010 is ready to drink. Still, I…
