Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Clos des Ducs: 1920-2017 (Oct 2019)

Good medium red; a bit less saturated than the 2010. More spicy and exotic on the nose than the ’10, with its raspberry and mineral aromas joined by a light herbal element. Enters the mouth with silky richness, then turns juicy in the mid-palate, showing a very suave texture and surprising framing acidity to its…

Marquis d’Angerville: Volnay Clos des Ducs 1920-2010 (Dec 2016)

Harvested 10-14th of September. The nose of crushed berries is exuberant, and in the mouth the sensation of explosive fruit is confirmed. A very dense and long wine, but unlike some 09s, it has great freshness and lift. Shows the precision and mineral underpinning that I expect in a great Ducs. This will live for…

2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Rousseau’s 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques is flat-out gorgeous. Waves of blue/purplish fruit hit the palate in an intense, explosive Burgundy loaded with pure class and pedigree. This is another 2011 that is going to need considerable time in bottle to come around. Today, the Clos St. Jacques impresses for its richness, power and depth.

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Good full red. Spicy red berries, cherry, licorice and a hint of horseradish on the nose. Juicy, brisk and taut; not hugely fleshy but energetic and penetrating. Conveys an impression of density without weight in the manner of the best 2011s. Tightly wound and very backward, finishing with terrific spicy persistence. Eric Rousseau bottled his…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Dark red with ruby tones. Sexy floral complexity to the aromas of red and darker berries. At once sweet and firm, displaying lovely density and silkiness for the year, with firm underlying minerality. Scented and precise in the middle palate and a bit youthfully medicinal on the long, rising finish. There’s nothing extravagant about this…

2010 Red Burgundies (Mar 2013)

Bright, saturated deep red. Incredible multidimensional nose combines cherry, raspberry, gunflint, crushed rock, flowers and oak spices; youthfully reserved but already remarkably complex. Thick but magically light on its feet, with penetrating red fruit flavors framed and carried by explosive salty minerality. This wonderfully vibrant, refined wine is showing no sign of shutting down but…
