Domaine de la Romanée Conti: A Survey of the 2021s (Mar 2024)

The 2012 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru is majestic. I don’t know how else to describe it. Deep and layered, with tons of palate presence, the 2012 is spellbinding from the minute it is served. All the elements are in perfect balance. The 2012 is a pretty powerful RSV that very much shows the character…

Battle Royale! Bordeaux 1961, 1982, 1990 & 1995

The 1990 Gruaud Larose has been hit ‘n’ miss over various bottles, not unlike the ’90 Montrose. This was a hit. It has a very youthful bouquet with dark berry fruit, tar and mint, certainly far less Brettanomyces than other examples. The palate is fresh and well structured, with hints of black truffle intertwined with…

2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

Pale yellow-gold. High-pitched nose hints at violet. Moderately dense and tight, with cool, uncompromisingly dry pear and mineral flavors. This is quite inexpressive today. Less phenolic than the Boudriotte but a tad warm on the finish.

2004 White Burgundies (Sep 2006)

Aromas of mint and lemon ice; like the Vergers, a bit rustic and earthy. Then supple and sweet in the mouth, with citrus and spice flavors dominating. The earthy character repeats on the slightly harsh back end. Not bad, but not exciting.

2007 and 2006 Red Burgundies (Mar 2009)

Medium red. Briary black raspberry, licorice, menthol and a whiff of spice on the nose. Supple, concentrated and sweet, with good depth to its dark fruit and earth flavors. Finishes persistent, with dusty tannins.

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Medium red, with a hint of development at the rim. Plum, meat, leather and smoky oak on the nose. Sweet, lush and approachable, with tobacco and smoke notes that reminded me of ripe Barolo. Seductively sweet finish features lush tannins.
