Outsider Looking In: Sociando-Mallet 1982-2015 (March 2019)

The 1996 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc picked between September 23 and October 8. This was aged 100% in new oak barrels for 12 months, followed by six months in tank. It has a generous, slightly chocolaty nose that I noticed before I…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Dark purple-ruby. Roasted nose combines blackberry, espresso and licorice. Large-scaled, mouthfilling and impressively deep; boasts terrific intensity and sweetness. Very long, ripely tannic finish. The estate has high hopes for its ’98, but it hard to believe it will surpass this wine.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Very good deep ruby-red. Smoke and currants on the nose. Black raspberry, minerals and graphite on the palate. Has a velvety texture but comes across as less harmonious than the ’95; though even, the tannins are more noticeable today. Doesn’t offer quite the sweetness or grip of the ’96.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Medium ruby. Aromas of roasted raspberry, roasted nuts, black olive and smoky oak; shows a slightly generic cold maceration quality. Chunky and dense in the mouth, with flavors of dark berries and earth. Finishes with slow-building, dusty tannins. Currently offers less charm than the ’99.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Good bright medium ruby. Dark berries, bitter chocolate and sexy smoky oak tones on the nose. Fat, full, concentrated and lush, with strong soil character and sound vinosity, giving the wine a chewy texture. Denser than the 2001. Finishes long and spicy, with ripe, suave tannins.

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Ferrière is a fruity, easy-going Margaux to drink now and over the next few years. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, dried herbs, iron and spice are all nicely lifted. Ferrière is a bit light, but it retains terrific freshness and has aged beautifully, even if it is not terribly complex. The tannins…
