2015 Brunello: The Vintage We Have Been Waiting For? (Apr 2020)

Here I’m finding a spicy display, with crushed black cherry giving way to zesty herbs and mineral tones, as hints of cedar, mint leaf, and worn leather evolve in the glass. On the palate, waves of silky textures are carried by brisk acids, as notes of black cherry and spice are carried by brisk acids,…

Montalcino: The Great 2015 Brunellos & More (Apr 2020)

Good full ruby-red. Captivating nose combines, ripe red cherry, black plum, minerals, herbs, mocha and sexy brown spices. Juicy and sweet, with refined, suave blackberry, raspberry, minerals and tobacco flavors dominating. Finishes extremely long, with a steely quality, fine-grained tannins and a multifaceted personality. Another great Brunello from Baricci.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Talbot is aromatically quite expressive, but less available on the palate, where it is quite closed down. Time in the glass brings out a host of sweet tobacco, smoke, leather, cedar, mint, licorice and red-toned fruit. In two tastings, Talbot gave the impression it is going to need at least a few years…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Talbot has an airy, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and light minty aromas, perhaps more Pauillac than Saint-Julien. The medium-bodied palate delivers gritty tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a graphite-infused finish. This is very fine for Talbot, a Saint-Julien hewn in a typically classic style. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

2011 and 2010 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2013)

Bright ruby. Sexy, spice- and mineral-accented aromas of red and dark fruit preserves and garrigue. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering vibrant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, a hint of smokiness and intense minerality. Tannins come on late and are quickly sucked up by this wine’s intense fruit. Rich and lively, with excellent…

Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Alluring 2023s and Benchmark 2010s (Nov 2024)

Alluring forest floor, ripe strawberry, melted licorice and peppery elements unfurl as the classic 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated, this serious wine delivers on all fronts, precisely combining substance, freshness and sophistication. The balance here is so impressive. An energetic and persistent close wraps it all up.
