2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Bright ruby-red. Expressive, classic aromas of currant, mocha, smoke and camphor. Rich, broad and ripe but impressively young, offering flavors of dark berries, chocolate, spices and smoke enlivened by firm acidity. This coats the palate nicely on the long finish, with tannins that are riper and sweeter than those of the 2006.

Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

The 2013 is a powerhouse. Dense, heady and massively structured, the 2013 is impossibly young. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of intense dark red fruit in this potent, brooding wine. Graphite, smoke, cedar and tobacco run through this virile, statuesque wine. The wine’s sheer youthful intensity is truly remarkable. I wouldn’t dream…

Harlan Estate Vertical at The Naples Winter Wine Festival (Sep 2017)

Racy and inviting, the 2012 Harlan Estate is the perfect wine to get this vertical started. Silky tannins and plush, richly textured fruit give the 2012 much of its immediacy. Succulent red cherry, plum, mocha, spice, rose petal and new leather are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite, sumptuous wine.

California’s North Coast (May 2014)

(this wine had been racked to tank on the morning of my visit): Full, bright ruby. Superripe, slightly high-toned aromas of cassis, blackberry and licorice, with a brightening note of minerality. Silky, dense and large-scaled but extremely primary and imploded, showing outstanding cut and lift to its dark berry and mineral flavors. A juicy minty…

Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016)

Giacosa’s 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is soft, open-knit and quite approachable. A bit light in color and also slightly advanced, the 2011 gives the distinct impression it will be a relatively early drinker. The flavors are ripe and slightly roasted, but the 2011 avoids being heavy. The 2011 Asili Riserva is a solid effort from…

Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2013)

(bottled in July of this year): Good medium red. Crushed cherry, raspberry, rose petal and botanical herbs on the tangy nose and palate. If the Santo Stefano is a more masculine, underbrushy style of nebbiolo, this one is a perfume bomb in the mouth, incredibly silky and fine-grained but with outstanding sappy tang to leaven…
