Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2019 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguette has plenty of vibrant red fruit on the nose, mixed with earth and orange rind. The palate is well balanced in an easy going style with touches of brown spice interlacing the red fruit on its poised finish. Fine.

2006 and 2005 Chablis (Jul 2007)

Pale yellow. High-toned, slightly exotic pineapple aroma-heavier, like the ’06, notes Bernard Raveneau. Fat and oily on the palate but with a very dry impression in spite of its ripe pineapple flavors. Very long and a bit warm on the back end, with a trace of finishing bitterness. In style this is more Cote de…

1971 x 50 (Feb 2021)

The bouquet on the 1971 Cheval Blanc has a savoury, almost ferrous tincture on the nose, but that is supported by satisfying levels of strawberry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied. Elegant and refined, veins of clove and bay leaf infuse the surprisingly fleshy red fruit and impart a silky texture and more precocity…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Cheval Blanc (Oct 2011)

(12.4% alcohol; 18.5 h/h): Garnet red. Knockout nose offers expressive scents of raspberry, strawberry, blood orange, cedar and faded violet. This impeccably balanced wine finishes extremely persistent, with a velvety, refined mouth feel, but I…

Joel Payne on Germany 2005 (Jan 2007)

Rich golden yellow. Smoky aromas of candied apple, cinnamon and lemon zest embedded in honeyed botrytis. The succulently creamy papaya fruit is spiked by a lemony citricity. This full-blown wine might appear clumsy at present, as its enormous depth is currently hiding its underlying elegance. For the long haul.

2015 Barolo – The Late Releases (Nov 2019)

The 2015 Barolo Serra is plush and forward, with terrific density and quite a bit of immediacy. A rush of sweet red cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol, star anise and cinnamon gives the 2015 its racy, exotic feel. Soft tannins (for a young Barolo) and lush, forward fruit add to its considerable appeal.
