The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(a 70/30 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Good bright, deep ruby-red. Cool aromas of blackberry, cassis, mint and shoe polish. Juicy, lively and firm, with coolish flavors of cassis, shoe polish, licorice and mint. On the tough side, finishing with a firm tannic spine and good floral persistence.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 2003 Rauzan-Ségla has a well-defined bouquet that is fresher than many 2003s at 20 years of age, with fragrant scents of blackberry, peony and iris flower. Good vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, taut and linear with a graphite-tinged, slightly tarry finish. Not bad at all, though I am not…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good red with a hint of development at the rim. Mellow aromas of sandalwood, mocha, coffee, smoked meat and nutty oak. Fat, round and sweet, with a silky texture but good rather than outstanding depth of flavor. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and good length.

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 de Fieuzal is fully mature. Black cherry, game, smoke, tobacco, worn-in leather, spice, mushroom and chocolate are the signatures of a wine that has seen its best days. There’s good depth still to the 2005, it’s just past its prime.

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good dark red. Roasted plum and beefsteak tomato; showing the exotically ripe side of the vintage. Fat, lush and sweet, with flavors similar to the aromas. Plenty of mocha and nuts from the oak, as well as some slightly drying wood tannins on the finish. Rich but a bit lacking in energy, and probably best…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Red-ruby. Cool aromas of blackberry and mint. Quite primary and unevolved today, with reasonably intense dark fruit flavors currently suppressed by a streak of acidity that gives the finish a dry edge. Seems a bit underripe/overripe today and is showing awkwardly.
