2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Capbern is a very pretty wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mocha and floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this supple, racy Saint-Estèphe. Dried herbs and a range of floral Cabernet Sauvignon inflections add character. Tasted two times.

Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Capbern was bottled at the end April 2019. The wine has a perfumed bouquet with black fruit and light marine aromas, and a touch of brine in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, very classic in style and quintessentially Saint-Estèphe. Moderate in length, there is a slight rawness on…

Chianti Classico: More Than Meets The Eye (Sep 2020)

Just as it was last year, the 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is magnificent. Dark, brooding and reticent, the 2016 is not ready to show all it’s got. If anything, the 2016 is even more reticent than it was last year at this time. Vigna del Sorbo has a great track record…

2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: A Day’s Work (Jul 2020)

The 2017 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru is dense, ample and also ethereal, as only it can be. Once again, Romanée-Conti elicits thoughts of art forms like cubist paintings or jazz, where themes are implied but never expressly stated. Above all else Romanée-Conti is a Burgundy that engages all the senses. You want answers, but all you…

Complex, Not Complicated: 2017 DRC in Bottle (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on September 8 at 35hl/ha and bottled April 25–26 . It has a quintessential Romanée-Conti bouquet of pure, seductive red fruit (morello cherry, cranberry, raspberry), extremely well defined and focused, plus subtle sea spray/seaweed aromas; with continued aeration, I noticed just a faint touch of curry leaf in…

The Innings Continues: 1948 to 1995 Yquem (May 2025)

The 1993 Yquem is another vintage from a period where even this Sauternes was compromised by malevolent growing seasons, specifically, inclement conditions come harvest after rain fell from September 9 to October 15. Given the uneven quality of fruit, some parcels saw 90% deselected between picking from October 18 to November 4. Nevertheless, despite this…
