Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Langoa-Barton is quite upfront on the nose, delivering lush black fruit, menthol, boysenberry and cedar, opulent for the vintage and quite precocious. The palate is lightly spiced and very cohesive, with saturated tannins and fine acidity, quite backward for a 2000 and less rustic than some of the millennials. It lacks a little…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good ruby-red. Superripe aromas of roasted black raspberry and blackcurrant complicated by roasted nuts, sexy oak spices and game. Juicy, penetrating and vinous, with complex currant, lead pencil and oak flavors. A firm, structured wine with very good backbone and big, cheek-coating tannins.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of black and red fruits and dark chocolate; almost but not quite pruney. Then pliant, sweet and lush, with explosive black raspberry fruit and lots of early personality. This is downright hedonistic and deceptively soft. Finishes very long and ripe, with extremely fine tannins.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Deep red-ruby. Deep, superripe, fully expressed aromas of black raspberry, chocolate, smoke and leather, plus a ripe vegetal nuance that contributes complexity. Velvety, lush and full in the mouth, but rather closed following the bottling; the wine sweetness is currently restrained. Conveys a sense of brooding power. The silky, fine tannins hit the palate very…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Medium-deep red. Plum, currant, mocha and brown spices on the nose. Lush and sweet, with moderate density and harmonious acidity. Perhaps a bit livelier in the mouth than on the nose. Not nearly as ripe on the back end as the ’98, but has sneaky finishing flavor.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Duhart-Milon has a fresh, quite perfumed and floral bouquet of vibrant red and black fruit mixed with mint and pressed iris. There’s lovely focus here, and it’s less sauvage than the 2000. The palate is medium-bodied, cohesive and focused, with supple tannins and fine acidity. This gently builds toward a lightly spiced, finely…
