2006 and 2005 Red Burgundies (Mar 2008)

Good full red. Ripe aromas of cherry, minerals and rose petal. Sweet and juicy, with a bit less density than the Charmois. Bright red fruit and mineral flavors show a medicinal austerity on the back end, suggesting that this firmly tannic, solid wine will reward five or six years of aging.

Vinous Table: Logis de la Cadène, Saint-Émilion (Oct 2018)

For the rest of the meal we polished off an excellent and well-priced 2009 Château d’Aiguilhe since I do not often encounter Stephan von Neipperg’s Côtes de Castillon with maturity. Deep in colour, the 2009 has a gorgeous bouquet that probably reflects the growing season more than the terroir: scents of black fruit, black olive,…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

(80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc): Bright medium ruby. Expressive, inviting aromas of black raspberry and minerals. Dense, sweet and seamless, with lovely energy and definition to its its dark raspberry and chocolate flavors. Finishes with smooth, suave tannins and slow-building length. The best result to date from this chateau, which is owned by Stephan…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(an 80/20 blend of merlot and cabernet franc, cropped at just 26 hectoliters per hectare; 45% new oak) Inky purple. Very rich, spicy aromas of dark smoky plum and blackberry jam are just this side of overripe, but manage to stay maintain vibrancy. This successfully continues its balancing act on the palate, with very ripe,…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Fully saturated inky-ruby. Somewhat oak-dominated on the nose presently, with aromas of red cherry, rose petal, graphite and brown spices. Rich and lush but less obviously fruit-driven than usual in this vintage, combining sweeter mocha and earth tones with ripe delicate dark fruit flavors. The slightly granular, mounting tannins will need several years of bottle…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Opaque ruby. Pungent raspberry and blackberry aromas are complicated by minerals and dried flowers. Lively red fruit flavors gain depth in the middle palate and pick up a deeper cherry pit quality. The finish repeats the cherry note and leaves notes of licorice and smoky minerals behind. I’d give this a few more years of…
