2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Full, bright red. Energetic aromas of black raspberry, cherry, rose and spicecake, with a hint of musky herbs. Weighty red and dark berry compote flavors are lifted by tangy minerality and complemented by candied flowers and anise. Finishes dense and chewy, with lingering notes of sweet dark fruits.

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Grand Corbin Despagne is a powerful, brooding wine. Beams of tannin give it much of its shape and overall feel. Savory herbs, smoke, leather and tobacco add to an overall impression of pure power. Give this muscular Saint-Émilion at least a few years to soften. I suspect Grand Corbin Despagne will always display…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good bright ruby-red. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, flowers and mint. Cool, juicy and leanish but with good lift to the pure red fruit flavors. Ultimately conveys a rather austere impression, with the finish showing a tart quality and firm tannic spine. The team did a shorter than normal maceration at cool temperature in search of…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

(the label actually says Goulee by Cos d’Estournel; Michel Reybier owns both): Good full bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Quite reduced on the nose, offering musky scents of dark raspberry, smoked meat, black olive and earth. Then plush and generous in the mouth, with impressive density to the smoky flavors of raspberry, black cherry…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(80% cabernet sauvignon with 20% merlot; 3.52ph; 13.7% alcohol) Dark red. Liqueur-like red and black berries on the ripe, fresh nose. Lush on entry, then easygoing and lively, with black fruit-driven flavors lifted by mineral and menthol nuances. A charming, delicious wine with plenty of energy and balance, a smooth finish and solid length. In…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Gloria is a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried flowers, menthol, herbs and cedar lend quite a bit of character. In 2019, Gloria is defined by its intensely feral personality and tannins. Perhaps time will help. Today, Gloria does not appear to be quite the charmer that it can be.
