Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

(51% merlot, 34% cabernet sauvignon and 15% cabernet franc): Deep purple. Cherry, mocha, licorice and a whiff of meat on the nose. Pliant and sweet in the mouth, with good herbal lift to the raspberry, red plum and sweet spice flavors. Ripe tannins spread out to dust the entire mouth. A potentially very good Potensac.

The 2001 Red Burgundies at Age 15 (Apr 2017)

Bright, fresh medium red. Shimmering perfume of red fruits, caramel, truffle, porcini and damp earth. Wonderfully vibrant and complex in the mouth, offering terrific precision to the flavors of black cherry, mulch, tar and smoke; there’s a faint noble vegetility here that reminds me of a young Romanée-Conti! 2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

Yellow fruits and spices on the nose, plus a whiff of banana. Broad, ripe and sweet, with good stuffing and adequate acidity. The yellow fruit flavors carry through on the palate and aftertaste.

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Palish medium red. Deeply pitched aromas of very ripe wild red berries, cherry and smoked meat; almost a roasted quality here. Fat for a 2008, fuller and wilder than the Capita. Also more animal and less minerally. Finishes a bit youthfully clenched.

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2008 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with ripe red cherry mixed with mulberry, tea leaf and touches of mushroom – quite complex and full of personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry, then it suddenly turns quite strict and linear, as if it pulls back everything it was…

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Good deep red. Black cherry, licorice and herbs on the nose, given punch by strong peppery spices. Sweet, supple and nicely concentrated if a bit less complex and high-pitched than the 2009 version. Lovely black cherry fruit displays a tangy sweetness. The very long finish features dusty, fine-grained tannins. The crop level here was just…
