The Best New Wines From Spain (Sep 2004)

Deep, bright ruby-red. Cherry, licorice and smoked meat at the outset; then exploded with raspberry fruit. Lush, smooth and silky, with lovely inner-mouth perfume. Highly complex flavors of raspberry, minerals, bitter chocolate and smoky oak convey an extraordinary sweetness without any excess weight. Expands wonderfully on the extremely long, aromatic finish, which features noble, palate-dusting…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

In 2015, Mouton Rothschild is fabulous. A big, towering wine, the 2015 makes its presence felt with layers of super-ripe dense fruit and striking textural resonance that carries all the way through to the finish. The 2015 is much more reticent from bottle than it was from barrel, which is not at all surprising, but…

Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)

The 2015 Mouton-Rothschild has a very Pauillac-like bouquet with cassis, violet and pencil shaving aromas that are all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins. This is so sapid with touches of shucked oyster shells toward the persistent finish. It is excellent. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)

The 2015 Mouton-Rothschild has a sense of exuberance on the nose, with fleshy red berry fruit, briary, tobacco and light sous-bois scents. This does not have the intensity of the 2015 Latour at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with pliant tannins. It's harmonious and poised, with fine depth and silky texture, though…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Good deep ruby. Aromas of blackberry, black tea, bitter chocolate and tobacco are somewhat dominated by the oak presently. Dense and very firmly built, with peppery acidity providing lift to the slightly high-toned black fruit syrup and spice flavors. The long, peppery, serious finish features dusty tannins and very good grip, but I wonder if…

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Saint-Pierre is well-defined on the nose, quite open, veins of blue fruit here with a more floral, Margaux-like personality. This seems to gain complexity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with blackcurrant and bilberry on the entry. The oak comes on a bit “thick” here, and governs the finish more than the…
