The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a classy affair on the nose: nothing ambitious or self-aggrandizing, just beautifully defined black fruit laced with pine needles and wilted irises. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, filigreed tannin, pitch-perfect acidity and a captivating sense of mineralité toward the persistent finish. This is an outstanding Domaine…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Léoville Poyferré is gorgeous. Dark, sumptuous and ample on the palate, it possesses remarkable depth. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, scorched earth, licorice and menthol all flesh out as this radiant, deeply expressive wine shows off its considerable pedigree. The 2014 is going to need time to fully come together, but it is super-impressive….

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a magnificent nose that is a cut above its peers: more concentrated, more delineated and has stunning depth with complexity that only comes through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, but this Saint-Julien has real backbone and density, with impressive substance towards the finish. One of the…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Talbot is aromatically quite expressive, but less available on the palate, where it is quite closed down. Time in the glass brings out a host of sweet tobacco, smoke, leather, cedar, mint, licorice and red-toned fruit. In two tastings, Talbot gave the impression it is going to need at least a few years…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Talbot has an airy, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and light minty aromas, perhaps more Pauillac than Saint-Julien. The medium-bodied palate delivers gritty tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a graphite-infused finish. This is very fine for Talbot, a Saint-Julien hewn in a typically classic style. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)

The 2015 Hosanna has a delectable, well-defined and complex bouquet with red berry fruit, freshly tilled loam, mocha and light irony scents percolating through with time. This appears to have gained delineation in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied, lightly peppered and beautifully balanced, with fine-boned tannins and a very satisfying, harmonious finish. This comes…
