Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc): Full ruby-red. Blackcurrant, smoke and pepper on the fruity nose. Then surprisingly supple and broad in the mouth, with a delicacy to the dark fruit and mineral flavors. Turns a bit youthfully clenched toward the back, owing to a peppery quality that carries through to the reasonably persistent finish.

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 La Pointe has a savory, maybe slightly bretty bouquet that lacks the freshness of its peers, yet I find its animally nature quite appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, dry and slightly astringent, white pepper and clove towards the finish. Not bad, though not exactly memorable. Tasted blind at the…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Lafon-Rochet has a very engaging bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with pencil shavings and loamy scents. In fact, the more you nose this wine, the more its complexity becomes apparent. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine line of acidity, ripe and generous yet maintaining outstanding…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

Olivier Berrouet turned out a fabulous Petrus in 2019. A gorgeous, expansive wine, the 2019 opens beautifully over time. There is a feeling of radiance in the 2019 that is impossible to miss. Hints of rose petal, lavender, mint and cinnamon meld effortlessly into a core of red/purplish fruit. At 14.8%, the alcohol is high,…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Pétrus is relatively flamboyant on the nose with gregarious black cherries, raspberry coulis scents mixed with autumn bonfire and fireside hearth. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, well balanced, quite fresh with a poised and delineated finish. I adore the pepperiness that lingers in the mouth, a multifaceted Pomerol with a…

Intellect & Senses: Bordeaux With Time (Mar 2025)

The 2014 Kirwan was the last vintage made in the old vat-room. It has a more tertiary nose than expected, featuring red plum, cranberry and a touch of singed leather. This is a little more rustic especially after the nascent 2022. The palate is marked by firm, rigid tannins and a hint of dried blood….
