1999 and 1998 Red Burgundies (Mar 2001)

Bright ruby-red. Expressive aromas of black plum, blackberry and roast coffee. Sweet, ripe and quite plush; perhaps less shapely and fine than the Vosne Beaumonts but at least as concentrated. But this offers lovely purity of fruit and a sweet, pliant finish, with rather noble tannins. Atypically open for this wine at this stage of…

2004 and 2003 White Burgundies (Sep 2005)

Reticent aromas of menthol, minerals, hazelnut and white truffle; still a bit stunted by the bottling. Large-scaled and sweet, with concentrated but slightly aggressive flavors of lemon, flowers, spices and stone. I don’t find this wine’s typical mineral spine today. Finishes with vanillin oak and very good length.

Château de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 1985-2016 (Jun 2019)

(30 h/h; 9/20 harvest): Moderately saturated medium red with an amber edge. A sexy note of torrefaction to the aromas of chocolate-covered dark cherries, licorice, dried flowers and underbrush. Wonderfully fresh, silky and spherical; perfectly ripe but not overripe, with its sweet fruit character complicated by sappy, saline soil tones and a note of menthol….

The 2001 Red Burgundies at Age 15 (Apr 2017)

Slightly dull medium red. Sauvage scents of plum, mocha, earth and leather. Fairly supple and round but also conveys surprising energy to its flavors of dusty raspberry and spices, with a cool-year peppery quality providing lift. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and an edge of acidity. Aeration brought hints of dried red fruits and apricot….

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Good red-ruby color. Pure aromas of black raspberry, violet, chocolate, coffee and exotic oak. Supple, juicy, moderately dense wine with good pinot cut and length. Should provide early drinkability.

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

(tasted at the end of its secondary fermentation) Bright ruby-red. Spicy blackberry, minerals and licorice on the pure, expressive nose. Juicy, fresh and tight, with dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors. In a lean style but nicely balanced and not dry. Finishes with good density and length.
