The 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Stepping Back in Time (Apr 2023)

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is simply magnificent. Tasted next to the 2002 – or I should say drunk next to the 2002 – the 2001 just has more of everything. Dark, sensual and inviting, the 2001 opens to reveal masses of dark fruit intermingled with, graphite, spice, lavender and licorice. The tannins and structure are…

Harlan Estate Vertical at The Naples Winter Wine Festival (Sep 2017)

Open-knit, sensual and perfumed, the 2005 Harlan Estate is super-expressive today. Like so many 2005s, the Harlan is a bit lacking in intensity and overall structure relative to the very best years. The 2005 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next 15-20 years. At some point during that arc of time,…

Vintage Retrospective: 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (May 2016)

Full medium ruby. Very ripe aromas and flavors of black raspberry, mocha, minerals and licorice. Wonderfully sweet and full in the mouth, offering sensational depth and palate coverage. Still very young but offers great sex appeal already owing to its sheer richness of flavor. Finishes with noble, seamless, fully ripe tannins and explosive rising length.

2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)

Bright medium yellow. Inviting aromas and flavors of lemon drop and musky lees lifted by floral and mineral elements. The light sulfidey character follows through on the palate, adding an element of complexity to this rather powerful, youthfully clenched wine. Offers an uncommon combination of density, definition and inner-mouth lift and finishes with a firm…

The 2014 & 2013 White Burgundies (Sep 2015)

(this and the following premier crus were bottled in March): Pale, bright yellow. Musky, fruit-driven aromas of ripe peach, nectarine and tangerine. Supple and plump but dry, showing less obvious acidity and cut than the Clavoillon. Finishes with a dusty impression of extract. But in an awkward stage two months after the bottling.

The 2014 White Burgundies: What’s Not To Like? (Sep 2016)

Bright, pale yellow. Riper and more expressive on the nose than the Folatières, with apricot and peach aromas lifted by minerality. In a distinctly richer, sweeter, more open-knit style than the Folatières in the middle palate, showing a strong spice character and a firm mineral underpinning. Turns considerably tighter on the long back end, finishing…
