Exploring Maremma’s 2003 and 2004 Vintages (Feb 2007)

Ample, sweet and expansive, the 2003 Sassicaia offers generous notes of sweet dark fruit intermingled with notes of spices, herbs, earthiness and smoke in a full-bodied, opulent expression of this wine. It is an outstanding effort for the vintage. Some cellaring is suggested although with air this wine is drinking beautifully right now.

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Sep 2006)

(80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc) Dark ruby-red. Appealing smoky, minerally aromas of red cherry, blackcurrant and plum, with a hint of truffle. Quite suave on entry, then smooth and fine-grained, with good mineral lift to the decidedly sweet red fruit flavors. This broad, rich and supple wine boasts tremendous length and silky-sweet tannins….

2011 and 2010 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2013)

Bright ruby. Exotic, smoke-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry and potpourri, with Asian spice adding complexity. Juicy, penetrating red and dark berry flavors show very good energy and appealing sweetness, with tangy acidity adding lift. Finishes seamless and long, with very good clarity and lingering spiciness.

The 2019 La Pointe is a very pleasant, straightforward Pomerol to drink now and over the next decade or so. Cedar, dried flowers, mint, pipe tobacco and incense are woven throughout a core of red berry fruit. The 2019 is delicate, but there is terrific substance here too.

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 La Pointe offers impressive clarity on the nose of perfumed red fruit, raspberry and cranberry intermingling with truffle and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, and quite saline, with fine-grained tannins and a cohesive and more sophisticated finish than any recent vintage. Maybe it just needs a little…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Ségla has a tertiary, smoky, pencil box scented bouquet, a bit grouchier than its Margaux peers, stubborn in its flush of youth. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, pretty and quite elegant with a keen thread of acidity. There is impressive precision on the finish, quite mineral-driven with a satisfyingly persistent aftertaste….
