2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Clinet has not come together as well as I had hoped. Today, it is wild, exotic and rough around the edges, with angular contours, all of which convey an impression of rusticity. Iron, game, smoke, blood and red plum fruit add some nuance, but there is just not much finesse here.

Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Clinet was bottled at the end of June 2019. It has a more understated bouquet than the 2015 or 2016. Tightly wound, brambly black fruit with traces of pressed violet and iodine, gradually open with orange rind notes. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. This is classic in style, firm grip and…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla is just as impeccable from bottle as it was from barrel. Silky, perfumed and nuanced in the glass, the wine exudes finesse. Expressive floral notes, spice and succulent red/purplish stone fruits are all beautifully delineated. In 2014, Rauzan-Ségla is a wine of understated class with the potential to improve for several decades….

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Rauzan-Ségla has quite a lush, precocious bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, hints of juniper berry and brown spices, gaining intensity with continued aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp and focused, precise with a detailed, mineral-driven finish that is a real treat. This is a fine Rauzan-Ségla even…

2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)

(Jadot made two barrels of this wine, vs. a normal six; the vines are situated high on the slope, not far from Jadot’s Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles): Very pure but subdued aromas of apple and spices. Concentrated and sappy on the palate, conveying an enticing touch of oaky sweetness to its flavors of white peach, spiced…

The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

Another stellar wine, the 2004 Dom Pérignon is just starting to show the first signs of aromatic development, as well as a bit of added weight it did not have as a young wine. The 2004 remains a bright, mid-weight DP built on persistence and length more than overt volume. I have always had a…
