Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2013)

(14.7% alcohol with 6.0 grams of acidity; bottled the week before my visit): Good full, dark red. Lovely floral perfume to the tangy red cherry aroma; I might have picked this as Burgundy from the nose. Juicy, intense and sharply delineated, with compelling inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of red cherry, raspberry and rose petal….

Champagne: The 2018 Summer Preview (Jul 2018)

The 2008 Argonne is a rich, dense wine. A rush of crème brûlée, apricot jam, new French oak, almonds, candied orange peel, and hazelnut announce this dense, powerful Champagne. Tropical overtones add to the wine’s an exotic feel. Although there is not much subtlety, the 2008 will appeal to readers who appreciate flamboyant Champagnes. I…

Unrivalled/ Unequalled: Yquem 1921–2019 (Apr 2022)

The 1991 Yquem is a vintage that I have not tasted for some 14 years. Several parcels survived the frost on 21 April that enabled an Yquem to be made from three tries through the vineyard. Deep in colour, it has a tangy marmalade and adhesive scented bouquet that oddly reminds me of the 1991…

Magic and Madness: Climens 1912-2020 (Aug 2022)

The 1988 Climens has a focused bouquet with lovely orange pith, quince, wet wool and showing a very light sea spray influence. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, not quite as deep as the 1989. A more feminine and elegant Climens with a poised and quite persistent finish that just fades a little….

Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Green-edged straw color. Sweet butter, marzipan and a bright, riesling-like note of petrol on the nose. Fresh, firm and sharply delineated; the least rich and the driest of these three vintages, in the style of the year. But quite concentrated. Intriguing note of white raisin. Finishes very long and firm, with a slight sensation of…

2000 and 1999 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2002)

Subtle aromas of white flowers, citrus skin and spices, along with a whiff of mirabelle Rather closed in the middle, with hints of citrus fruit and licorice. A very rich and rather powerful style; manages to maintain its balance despite its 14% alcohol, yet it’s hard to get a handle on this wine today.
