The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright red-ruby. Medicinal aromas of black cherry, cassis and licorice. Classically dry and cool but with good mid-palate texture and ripeness. The medicinal quality carries through to the persistent finish but the tannins avoid coming off as dry. Very successful for this estate.

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Batailley has a slightly more mature color than its peers. The nose is completely different: much more red fruit, dried blood, white pepper and warm gravel scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, rigid tannin. The acidity is nicely judged although I find the finish here lacking the delineation and precision of its…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Batailley has a backward nose, black fruit, dried blood and white pepper (like before); it is very classic in style, but I would have liked a bit more brightness and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, just a soupçon of greenness towards the finish. It’s a decent Batailley, but the quality…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Saturated medium ruby. Blackberry and bitter chocolate on the nose. Juicy, spicy and tight; still youthfully austere in the middle. Rather linear today, but nicely balanced and not hard. The dense black fruit and violet flavors saturate the palate on the persistent, juicy, firmly tannic finish.

2014 Bordeaux: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over (Apr 2015)

The 2014 La Petite Eglise offers lovely immediacy and suppleness. Sweet dark cherry, hard candy, flowers, plum, menthol and licorice are super-expressive in the glass. Round and immediate, the Petite Eglise is a lovely second wine with plenty of depth and appeal. Petite Eglise is 100% Merlot from gravelly soils.

Come On Aline: Château Coutet 1943-2017 (Feb 2024)

The 2005 Coutet is very refined on the nose with delineated yellow plum, tangerine and honeysuckle scents. Chamomile and saffron aromas surface with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with viscous honeyed fruit, laced with orange peel and quince, perhaps with just a little abruptness on the finish when you wish it would hang around…
