2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has quite an intense bouquet of mainly red but some black fruit, the oak neatly enmeshed and hints of black truffle and tobacco emerging with aeration. This feels very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and good structure. There is a firm…

The 2013 Red Burgundies (Jan 2015)

Full red with a slight haze. Musky, leesy aromas of dark cherry, graphite, licorice and herbs. Very rich but youthfully monolithic; boasts plenty of power but shows less precision and lift than the Chapelle. Today the wine’s tannins shut down the finish. This fruit got a cold maceration and was vinified with a portion of…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a harmonious, powerful bouquet of layers of red berry fruit laced with crushed stone and pressed rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Hints of wild mint and star anise infuse the finish, which fans out gloriously. This is a…

This large-scaled, broad 2012 is going to need quite a bit of time to fully…

2012 Red Burgundies (Jan 2014)

Good deep red. Musky aromas of red fruits, mocha and earth. Sweet, saline and aromatic in the mouth, with rich, supple red fruit and soil flavors showing building intensity. The rising finish is rich and smooth but doesn’t show quite the class of the Chapelle.

’16 vs. ’15 Northern Rhône: Heads You Win, Tails You Win (Apr 2018)

Inky ruby. Deep-pitched, smoke- and spice-accented aromas of black currant and cherry compote, violet and incense take on a hint of exotic spices with air. Lush and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated black and blue fruit liqueur, licorice and spicecake flavors that are sharpened by a smoky mineral element. Becomes sweeter and livelier with…
