Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Les Pagodes de Cos has a loose-knit bouquet, slightly richer in style than its peers with hints of fig infusing the black cherry and boysenberry fruit. I found this slightly “confit” in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, good acidity and demonstrating better balance than the aromatics imply. I appreciate…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Les Pagodes de Cos is racy and voluptuous from the outset. Dark stone fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice and dark spices run through this succulent, textured Saint-Estèphe. The interplay of dense flavors from the dehydration of fruit by warm days and anticyclonic winds resulted in an unusually opulent second wine, made in a flamboyant,…

Bordeaux 2013: Definitely Not the Vintage of the Century (May 2014)

Moderately saturated medium red. Subtly sweet aromas of minty red cherry, iron and minerals. Suave on entry, then sweet, fine-grained and very clean, with captivating, somewhat cool red berry, floral and minty flavors. Not a powerful or particularly deep style, but floral, classy and impeccably balanced. Finishes with firm tannins that avoid dryness.

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

Stone fruits, plums, black cherries and cassis are some of the notes that meld together in the 2013 Croix de Beaucaillou. The 2013 impresses for its centeredness, poise and length, not to mention its terrific overall balance. A richly textured, juicy finish rounds things out in style. This is a very pretty, impeccably balanced wine…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Red-ruby. Reticent aromas of dark berries, spices, licorice and menthol. Then almost shockingly supple, ripe and layered, with unexpected fullness and a sweet, gentle character. This is harmonious from the outset. Not at all a powerful style, but silky and suave. And nicely sweet on the back end, with the tannins arriving late.

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Langoa Barton was picked September 21–24 for the Merlot and September 29–October 6 for the Cabernet, then matured in 60% new oak. It remains opulent and high-toned on the nose, retaining those overt blueberry and cassis scents that I remarked upon in barrel. The palate is sweet and charming, though for me it…
