New Releases from Piedmont (Dec 2010)

Rosso’s 2006 Barolo La Serra shows more density and freshness than the Serralunga, along with high-toned flowers, spices, mint and berries that flow from its focused, mid-weight frame. Firm, chewy tannins round out this strong effort from proprietor Davide Rosso.

Chianti Classico 2013 & 2012: The Luck of the Draw (Sep 2015)

The 2012 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from the Ruffoli sub-zone of Greve, is superb. High-altitude, hillside vineyards confer grace and nuance to a Merlot built on exquisite finesse. Sweet plum, mocha, rose petal and white pepper add gorgeous aromatic lift on the silky, sensual finish. Readers should expect an understated Merlot that emphasizes elegance over power.

BOND: A Complete Retrospective (Nov 2017)

A stellar wine, the 2002 Melbury is super-expressive today. Rich, ample and inviting, the 2002 is endowed with soft contours, radiant, rich fruit and fabulous balance. Mocha, smoke, leather, red stone fruit and sweet spices build into the resonant, deeply satisfying finish. The 2002 is one of the more overtly ripe, forward wines in the…

A Bond Extravaganza (Jun 2017)

Saturated dark red with ruby tones. Fat, tactile and rich but perhaps a bit overripe (the pH here is a solid 4.0); creamy and sweet but…

Piedmont Report: Checking in on the 2001 Baroli (Apr 2012)

The 2001 Barolo Falletto impresses for its layered, silky personality. Sweet roses, tar, licorice and menthol are all woven together in this deceptively medium-bodied Barolo. There is plenty of muscle to back things up. Today the Falletto is quite a bit more delicate than it has been in the past.

2018 & 2019 Barbaresco Take Center Stage (Feb 2022)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is soft, layered and seductive, as wines from this site tend to be. Silky tannins and lifted aromatics lend finesse to this inviting Barbaresco from Giacosa. All the elements are very nicely balanced. I very much like elegance here, even if the inner sweetness Bruno Giacosa prized so much in…
