Santa Barbara: An In-Depth Look at the 2018s (Aug 2020)

The 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous. Bright, lifted and beautifully persistent, the Bien Nacido has so much going on. There is a sense of translucency I find absolutely compelling. Bright saline notes give the Bien Nacido energy, tension and drive. This is such a gorgeous wine.

Santa Barbara Dreamin’… Part One & Part Two (Sep 2018)

The 2016 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard offers lovely density and richness, with quite a bit of tannic intensity that is going to need time to resolve. Blue and purplish berry fruit, lavender, mint and spice all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s overall structure that stands out most. The 2016…

Santa Barbara: A Rare Bright Spot for California in 2020 (Aug 2022)

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard emerges from the original parcel of own-rooted vines planted in 1971. Crushed rocks, sage, mint, citrus and white flowers lend nuance to a bright, airy Chardonnay that is all understatement. The 2020 is not an obvious wine, but for readers who enjoy subtlety and nuance, this is very…

Santa Barbara: An In-Depth Look at the 2018s (Aug 2020)

The 2018 Chardonnay Carmel Vineyard shows all of the phenolic intensity that is typical of this Sta. Rita Hills site. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many aromas and flavors that come alive in the glass. As with the Pinot, the Chardonnay is powerful and yet also remarkably translucent. The…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Beaune (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has a more austere bouquet compared to the La Truffière: granite and flint notes, a touch fumé in style. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, strict and correct, a Puligy with a sapid finish that cries out for fruits de mer! Very…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy Additions (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru is a little steelier, maybe slightly more malic on the nose compared to the Champ Canet. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, slightly waxy in texture with hints of white pepper towards the finish that just dips before the finish line and loses…
