Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2010)

Good deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines dark berries, graphite, cedar and flowers. The palate offers uncanny clarity and depth of flavor, combining elegance and density in the way of a great grand cru site. Wonderful energy here, as well as inner-palate floral lift. A great vintage for Harlan Estate, with nothing overdone about it. Incidentally,…

Harlan Estate Vertical at The Naples Winter Wine Festival (Sep 2017)

The 2010 Harlan Estate is a total head-turner. Powerful, dense and exotically ripe – as so many wines are in this vintage – the 2010 dazzles with magnificent intensity. Baritone inflections run through the black cherry, graphite, smoke, tar and licorice flavors. Heat spikes at the end of what was generally a cold growing season…

Vintage Retrospective: The 2010 Napa Valley Cabernets (May 2020)

Saturated full ruby to the rim. Brooding scents of black fruits, licorice, minerals, menthol and forest floor. Dense, thick and utterly seamless but alive on entry, then powerful, delineated and penetrating in the middle palate, with licorice, mountain berry and mineral flavors carrying through an explosive, unflagging aftertaste. Utterly palate-staining, endless wine with great power…

The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons at Age Ten (May 2022)

The 2011 Harlan Estate is a real stunner. Still fresh and vibrant, the 2011 is a magically beautiful wine. It is, naturally, more small-scaled. Crushed flowers, sweet red dry fruit, tobacco, cedar and mint notes are super classy. The 2011 has enough freshness to drink well for another 10-15 years. It’s fabulous achievement.

California’s North Coast (May 2014)

Saturated bright ruby. Precise aromas of urgent crushed blackcurrant, licorice and violet. Densely packed but very tightly coiled today, communicating a powerful impression of brooding energy in the way of a young Latour. At once imploded and smooth, showing superb precision to its black fruit and mineral flavors. Less expressive today than the line-up of…

2017 & 2018 Napa Valley In Depth (Jan 2020)

The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sage Mountain Vineyard may very well be the single greatest vintage made here thus far. It is quite simply a stunning wine and a towering achievement from the Mondavi family. Powerful, ample and sweeping in stature, the 2016 boasts breathtaking intensity in all of its dimensions. I see the pure,…
