2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Medium ruby. Spicy, evolving aromas of red fruits, leather and mint. Sweet and lush, with a mellow combination of wood and fruit components complicated by animal and vanillin notes. A nicely textured, rather exuberant wine of modest depth, finishing with light but slightly green tannins. Should be excellent in three or four years.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Nines (Sep 2019)

The 1999 d’Armailhac is a wine that I have had a tepid reaction to for a number of years. The slightly herbaceous bouquet features light blackberry and bilberry notes and a touch of brine and mint. The palate is medium-bodied and quite bitter, with grainy, slightly dry tannin and a ferrous finish. This falls short…

Moving On: Lafon-Rochet 1955-2017 (Jun 2023)

The 2000 Lafon-Rochet is a vintage that I have not encountered for many years. Now showing some bricking on the rim, it has quite an exotic bouquet with maraschino cherry, strawberry, balsamic and brown spices, nicely defined and holding up well. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, with grainy tannins. Maybe a little dryness is…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Dark red. Assertive, oaky nose features smoked meat and leather. Sweet, dense and packed with fruit. Really spreads out on the back end, finishing with broad, powerful tannins.

Vinous Table: Elystan Street, London, United Kingdom (Sep 2020)

The second bottle, from an estate I know like the back of my hand, was the 1996 Pontet Canet. One or two people had suggested that this might be past its best; after all, it predates the innovations and application of biodynamics overseen by Alfred Tesseron by several years. On the contrary, it has aged…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Deep ruby-red. Blackcurrant, plum, tobacco and black olive nose is more complex and serious than that of either of the foregoing vintages. Thick, grapey and concentrated; still quite primary. This shows the fat and depth of the ’96 vintage in the northern Medoc. Finishes long, with substantial tannins. Impressive.
