Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Puygueraud has developed into a gorgeous wine. Bright floral and spice notes lend freshness to this fruity, supple Francs Côtes de Bordeaux. This is the first vintage in which a portion of the wine was aged in cask, which has given the 2020 an attractive freshness that I did not sense en primeur….

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Puygueraud has a very satisfying and harmonious nose: blackberry, briary, freshly rolled tobacco and light truffle scents, nicely focused and composed. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, as I found in barrel. Quite Left Bank in style with graphite notes towards the finish with a briny aftertaste. Excellent.

The Vast Bounty of Central Spain (Feb 2021)

Deep, shimmering ruby. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla, pipe tobacco, exotic spices, cola and potpourri. Deeply concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering smoke-laced black currant, cherry liqueur, spicecake and mocha flavors that display outstanding clarity and pick up a candied violet nuance on the back half. Polished, steadily…

A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Duhart-Milon has a really wonderful bouquet driven by the higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), with pencil shaving aromas infusing the black fruit. This is quintessential Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and vibrant, with fine-boned tannins and an almost crunchy texture toward the saline finish. Beautifully balanced and poised, this…

2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Duhart-Milon is a big, rich wine. Ample and expansive on the palate, it has so much to offer. Cabernet Sauvignon takes center stage as dark-toned fruit, graphite and expressive savory nuances open with aeration. Huge swaths of creamy tannins wrap it all together, building to a substantial, explosive finish. The 2022 is an…

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Good medium red. Dark raspberry, earthy spices, mint, minerals, game and smoky minerality on the nose. Dense and energetic; large-scaled and brooding. This boasts the spherical texture and fat of a riper year. Perhaps not as brilliantly delineated as the Reignots today but this is plusher, broader and deeper wine. Finishes extremely long, scented and…
