2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla is super-classy from start to finish. Sweet floral notes meld into spice, dried flowers, lavender and black cherry. This is a distinctly racy, open Rauzan-Ségla that should drink well with minimal cellaring. Today, the new oak is a bit prominent, but a little more time in bottle should take care of things.

Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Moderately saturated medium red. Blackcurrant, herbs and a hint of spicy chocolatey oak on the nose. Supple and vinous on the palate, with moderate flesh and depth to the flavors of blackcurrant, dried herbs and tobacco complemented by a wet earth nuance. Shows a slightly green tang on the moderately long finish.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla just comes across a little flat on the nose compared to the previous two wines. Mint-infused red fruit, allspice and a touch of liquorice, though a second bottle at the Bordeaux Index horizontal showed more chutzpah. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth, a toothsome Margaux with a dense,…

The Margaux Paragon: Rauzan-Ségla 1900-2015 (Apr 2019)

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla has a similar colour to the 2015 although it has a hard time competing with the delineation, the crystalline nature of the 2015. Yet it compensates with the sheer aromatic flamboyance. This has really opened up in the last 18 months or so, quite lush and precocious black fruit, loam and iris,…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good medium ruby. Explosive nose of black raspberry, coffee and leather. Hugely rich, dense and sweet, with deep flavors of currant, plum and chocolate complicated by underlying minerality. Wonderfully dense and full on the back end, with broad tannins and palate-staining length. Today, the 2005 comes off as dry by comparison. A standout of the…

Through the Other Side: Burgundy 2016 in Bottle (Oct 2019)

The 2016 Volnay Clos des Verseuil 1er Cru has a very perfumed, almost over-scented bouquet that feels very floral, rather obscuring the fruit profile underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, grippy and firm in the mouth with some dry wood tannins that are marring the finish at the moment. This is a…
