2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Grivot’s 2011 Vosne-Romanée is a sexy, open radiant wine. Red stone fruits and sweet spices are some of the nuances that flesh out in this inviting, village-level Vosne.

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Moderately saturated medium red. Red fruits, spices and underbrush on the nose, plus a distinct peppery element. Shows good earthy, underbrushy complexity but the pepper and herb notes currently dominate the middle palate. I find this a bit dry, especially following Grivot’s 2012s.

2003 Barolo: Ten Years Later (Jun 2014)

The 2003 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio has held up nicely. Dark red cherry, plum, cloves, new leather and licorice meld together in a mid-weight, fleshy, attractive Barolo with plenty of freshness. As always, the Bricco Ambrogio stands out in the Scavino range for its immediacy and fruit-driven personality.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good ruby-red color. Spicy aromas of currant, raspberry, licorice, coffee and tobacco leaf. Sweet, thick and layered, with slightly raw flavors of leather, licorice, tobacco leaf, bitter chocolate and fresh herbs. Finishes with very firm, slightly dry tannins and more obvious ripeness than the 2001.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Nenin is a vintage that I last tasted three years ago. It’s very similar now, those traits of violet and camphor still infusing the red fruit and a touch of iron rust and truffle emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and peppery, with a rustic opening and coarse tannins. An unapologetically…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 Alter Ego is unusually dark in this vintage, the result of abnormally low yields and very ripe Merlot. An exuberant, voluptuous wine, the 2012 hits the palate with a mélange of black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, tobacco and grilled herbs. There is more than enough tannin and acidity to support a good decade-plus…
