2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Bourgogne Rouge, which comes from old vines in Vosne-Romanée, has a lifted cranberry and raspberry bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and slightly gourmand in style, leading to a light but quite persistent dark cherry finish. Enjoy over the next two or three years.

The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru bursts from the glass with vibrant Morello cherry and wild strawberry scents. I appreciate the oak integration in this young wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a taut line of acidity, harmonious and lively, albeit with a swift, rather abrupt finish that I am hoping…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Good dark red. Laid-back aromas of currant, raspberry, smoke and earth. Quite dry and classic, with its dark raspberry, chocolate, spice and soil flavors showing a saline complexity if less plushness and sweetness than the 2015 version. Builds nicely on the back end, finishing with rather refined tannins. The crop level here was a reasonable…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

(bottled in June of 2016): Dark red. Deep fruit aromas of plum and redcurrant are complicated by leather, game and earth nuances. Surprisingly silky and broad, with its red fruit and smoke flavors joined by a note of milk chocolate. The wine’s substantial dusty but ultimately refined tannins currently shorten its finish but there’s enough…

A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The 2014 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was Paul Zanetti’s first vintage. Apparently it took a lot of work in the vineyard affected by hail and mildew. It has a rather rustic nose, predominantly red fruit laced with mocha and leather, just missing a bit of energy and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with…

2009 and 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape (Mar 2011)

Bright ruby. A heady bouquet displays fresh red berries, sandalwood, dried flowers and a hint of baking spices. Creamy in texture, with lively acidity lifting sweet red and dark berry and candied rose flavors. Becomes sappier with air and finishes with very good clarity and lingering spiciness. Avril thinks this wine will surprise people with…
