Going Underground: Clos Fourtet 1989-2019 (May 2025)

The 2005 Clos Fourtet was picked between September 26 and October 11 at 35 hl/ha. This has an outstanding bouquet with vivacious red fruit, brimming with crushed stone, a dash of tobacco and orange rind. Very cohesive and focused. There is a slight Rhône-like personality at almost two decades old. The palate is medium-bodied and…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good ruby-red. Rich plummy aroma. Deep and chewy if a bit youthfully sullen, with sweet flavors of redcurrant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes with chewy tannins. Distinctly fatter than the 2006 but a bit less chocolatey and dark in its flavor presentation.

A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 2005 Langoa Barton takes time to cohere in the glass, but eventually black cherries, black plum and a touch of mint develop. The palate is medium-bodied with just a little rusticity on the entry, dense tannins and fine acidity. The 2005 is a little muscular in style but nicely poised, with a slightly medicinal…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Langoa Barton is a wonderful surprise. Bright, fresh and so alluring, the 2005 is one of the under the radar jewels of the year. Freshly cut flowers, ripe red berry fruit, mint and blood orange give the 2005 striking aromatic lift and energy to match its mid-weight personality. This classy, polished Saint-Julien is…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good deep red. Pungent aromas of currant, cherry skin, leather, graphite, olive and flowers. Suave, minerally and penetrating, with lovely energy and floral lift. Not at all a fleshy style but classic, vibrant and firmly built, finishing with excellent lift.

Daniel Thomases on Tuscany (Jul 2000)

More saturated ruby. Rather similar in aromas (blackcurrant and oak spices) but a bit weightier and fuller on the nose. More concentrated than the 1996, with attractive oak notes to complement the cassis. Still, this doesn’t show the depth or complexity one might expect from an outstanding vintage. Finishes with a slight bitterness.
