A Century of Bordeaux: The Nines (Sep 2019)

The 1989 Figeac, picked September 11 to 29, was tasted with winemaker Frédéric Faye at the estate, although it was clearly not representative. Another bottle tasted a couple of weeks later in London chimes with my several previous encounters. Warm gravel, clove and a hint of licorice gradually unfurl on the nose, which is not…

Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 1986 La Lagune has a deep colour with less bricking than the 1982 by comparison. I find the nose here superior than the 1982 with plenty of fruit on the nose: wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherries mixed with tobacco and roasted chestnut. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a little austere in…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright red-ruby. Cherry liqueur, cedar and herbs on the nose. Smooth and fine-grained, with red fruit flavors lifted by spices and herbs. Possesses good stuffing but this is fairly tannic, even a bit dry with air, in light of its substantial merlot component of just over 50%.

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Potensac has a high-toned, airy bouquet with balsamic and Hoisin infusing the black fruit. The palate is well defined with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is something just a little “Oriental” about the style of this Potensac that delivers impressive body and grip on the finish. Very fine. Tasted…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Potensac has an attractive nose of brambly red fruit mixed with cedar and light tobacco aromas. The palate has a soft entry with sweet red cherries and wild strawberry, although strangely this bottle seems to lack backbone and grip towards the finish. Perplexing showing. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Looking Back To Go Forward: Lafite-Rothschild 1868 – 2015 (Jul 2018)

The 1966 Lafite-Rothschild is a wine that I have tasted twice before and it remains one of my favorite vintages from the period, even though as the Four Seasons First Growth dinner illustrated, not every bottle hits the spot. This bottle in Hong Kong ranks amongst the best that I have ever encountered. I notice…
