Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Ausone was picked at 37hl/ha (a little bit less than 2019 according to Pauline Vauthier) on 14 and 19 September for the Merlot, 23 and 29 September for the Cabernet Franc, matured in entirely new barriques with a light toasting. This 2020 has a tightly wound nose at first, needing more encouragement than…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Ausone has a very crisp and precise bouquet, with a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone, black truffle and cedar that gains intensity in the glass. Medium in body, the palate is composed and refined with fine tannins. A taut yet brilliantly defined, pixelated finish goes on and on and on….

Napa Valley’s Thrilling 2018s & 2019s, Parts 1 & 2 (Jan 2021)

The 2018 TD-9, Shafer’s Merlot-based blend, is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. Succulent dark red cherry/red plum fruit, licorice, spice, lavender and dried herbs are front and center. Readers will find a gorgeous 2018 that is ready to deliver plenty of pleasure from the get-go.

Exploring the Santa Cruz Mountains (Oct 2019)

The 2017 Zinfandel East Bench is bold and forward, with all of the intensity of Dry Creek very much in evidence. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, spice and chocolate all race out of the glass. The East Bench is always extroverted in style, as it is once again in 2017.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet les Folatières 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with green apple, wet limestone and light kiwi fruit scents. This is nicely focused and has more energy than the Pucelles. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite poised and harmonious towards the finish that needs more mineralité. Maybe…

2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)

The 2021 Laroque is classy, elegant and polished. A wine of stature and breeding, Laroque is a quintessentially finessed Saint-Émilion. Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and menthol. All the elements are very nicely balanced.
